Grupo Axé Capoeira Kansas City

Grupo Axé Capoeira began in Kansas City in 1998, with the first classes being taught at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Soon after, Mestre Barrão visited Kansas City for the 1st Annual Batizado and Troca de Corda. Classes were held at this location until late 2000 when we moved to the Prairie Life Fitness Center in Overland Park, Kansas. The group spent 5 years in Johnson County, successfully hosting 3 batizados and numerous workshops with Mestre Barrão and other professors from Grupo Axé Capoeira. In 2005, the group left Overland Park; in search of finding a home we could call our own. After trying various locations throughout the metro, the group settled on the east edge of downtown Kansas City, MO at a beautiful, second floor loft space.

Today, the group is staying very active with many shows across Kansas and Missouri; notably cultural events, ethnic festivals, First Fridays, and an occasional appearance on the Country Club Plaza. Also, many students have (and continue) to travel worldwide for workshops and events to places such as Brazil, Canada, Mexico and Europe. With the Academy, and a growing number of students, the group is still working to strengthen capoeira in Kansas City as it was when it started in 1998.
